چکیده

The discovery by Farquhar et al. (1) of mass-independent isotope fractionation of S and S in rocks formed more than ;2 billion years ago (Ga), but not in younger rocks, has boosted the theory postulating a dramatic change from an anoxic to an oxygen-rich atmosphere about 2 Ga. That is because the only known natural process that may cause mass-independent fractionation of both S and S involves atmospheric photochemical reactions by ultraviolet light in the absence of an ozone shield (1). Here, we suggest the strong possibility that the fractionation observed by Farquhar et al. (1) may have been created by analytical rather than natural processes. The magnitude of mass-independent fractionation of S or S, expressed as DS or DS, is defined as the deviation of a measured dS or dS value from the dS or dS value expected from the mass-dependent fractionation relationships. That is,

Annual sulfur cycle in a warm monomictic lake with sub-millimolar sulfate concentrations

BACKGROUND We studied the annual variability of the concentration and isotopic composition of main sulfur species and sulfide oxidation intermediates in the water column of monomictic fresh-water Lake Kinneret. Sulfate concentrations in the lake are <1 mM and similar to concentrations that are proposed to have existed in the Paleoproterozoic ocean. The main goal of this research was to explore ...

Kinetic oxygen isotope effects during dissimilatory sulfate reduction: A combined theoretical and experimental approach

Kinetic isotope effects related to the breaking of chemical bonds drive sulfur isotope fractionation during dissimilatory sulfate reduction (DSR), whereas oxygen isotope fractionation duringDSR is dominated by exchange between intercellular sulfur intermediates and water. We use a simplified biochemical model for DSR to explore how a kinetic oxygen isotope effect may be expressed. We then explo...

Intracellular metabolite levels shape sulfur isotope fractionation during microbial sulfate respiration.

We present a quantitative model for sulfur isotope fractionation accompanying bacterial and archaeal dissimilatory sulfate respiration. By incorporating independently available biochemical data, the model can reproduce a large number of recent experimental fractionation measurements with only three free parameters: (i) the sulfur isotope selectivity of sulfate uptake into the cytoplasm, (ii) th...

Influence of Phosphorus and Cell Geometry on the Fractionation of Sulfur Isotopes by Several Species of Desulfovibrio during Microbial Sulfate Reduction

We investigated the influence of organic substrates and phosphate concentration on the rates of dissimilatory microbial sulfate reduction and the 34S/32S isotopic fractionation produced by several Desulfovibrio species. Our experiments corroborate the previously reported species-specific correlation between sulfur isotope fractionation and cell-specific sulfate reduction rates. We also identify...

Tetrathionate and Elemental Sulfur Shape the Isotope Composition of Sulfate in Acid Mine Drainage

Sulfur compounds in intermediate valence states, for example elemental sulfur, thiosulfate, and tetrathionate, are important players in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle. However, key understanding about the pathways of oxidation involving mixed-valance state sulfur species is still missing. Here we report the sulfur and oxygen isotope fractionation effects during the oxidation of tetrathionate (...
